Trust accounting

Trust accounts, client ledgers, postings, and three-way reconciliation.

Route: /dashboard/platform/accounting. Needs canManageTrust.

Structure

RecordPurpose
TrustAccountThe bank account
TrustLedgerAccountClient or matter ledger inside it
TrustTransaction and TrustLedgerEntryBalanced postings
TrustBalanceSnapshotBalances at a date
TrustReconciliationThree-way reconciliation

Setup: setTrustAccountBankIdentity (only while the account is pending and has no postings), transitionTrustAccount, transitionTrustLedgerAccount. Close every client ledger, each at zero balance, before closing the account.

Posting

postTrustTransaction needs at least two entries that balance, an effective date, an active trust account, and an idempotency key of 12 to 160 characters. A client-liability entry needs a ledger account. A source payment or refund must be a same-account trust deposit in the same currency, and a transaction cannot reference both.

Postings are never edited. Correct with a reversing transaction.

Reconciliation

Prepare

prepareTrustReconciliation for a period with the statement balance.

Revise

reviseTrustReconciliation while it is a draft.

Complete

transitionTrustReconciliation once bank, book, and client ledgers agree.
